Episode 961: Brave

“I wish I could make this decision for you, take the weight off of you,” Sarette said before she took another sip of coffee. “This affects a lot of people.”

“People I care about,” Ava said. She reached for another cookie from the plate on the coffee table. “These are really good, maybe you could give me the recipe.”

“It’s actually my chef’s recipe, I’ll ask her about it,” Sarette promised and a great deal of chagrin followed. “I know that sounds pretentious having a chef bake homemade cookies.”

“It used to sound really foreign, and I don’t know, lazy to me,” Ava replied, “but, it’s the way Sebastian grew up, too. I’m not as surprised as I used to be to find out someone doesn’t know how to do something basic around the house. It’s actually kind of fun teaching him things, it’s a good way to get quality time together, which, I’ve pretty well avoided lately.”

Ava shook her head. “How awful does that sound? Avoiding quality time with my husband? I just, Xavier is so on my mind right now and I don’t want to say something that Sebastian might take the wrong way, he’s fairly sensitive when it comes to the subject of Xavier.”

“Marriage has ups and downs, sometimes it does feel like it’s easier to avoid than be around your spouse, but that doesn’t mean you love them any less.” Sarette hoped to reassure Ava. And she also hoped her next delicate question wouldn’t send Ava storming out of the door. It made Sarette nervous to ask, she didn’t want to offend Avalon after having this open conversation, but it felt like something Ava should consider. “You almost married Xavier, is any of that still lingering in this decision?”

Avalon appeared taken aback and Sarette feared she’d overstepped, though thankfully that awkwardness only endured for a moment.

“I care about Xavier, it makes me sad to think he’s missing out on having someone else in his life, someone who cares about him and who he cares about. He’s lived a pretty lonely life.”

“You said he told you he’s doing well, as far as his habits, he’s cleaned that up and he has some solid relationships to lean on.”

“Yeah, I was glad to hear all of that. I’m not in love with him anymore,” Ava emphasized, “but I do still love him.”

“That’s the difficulty, I know, there are people you love on every side of this. I certainly know that torn feeling.”

“And your decision is to keep quiet and just live with those torn feelings, not rock the boat.”

“That’s my decision, yes,” Sarette said. “I don’t know if it’s the right decision, but it is only my decision. We’re two different people, you are a braver person than I am.”
