Episode 962: The Right Stuff

“Are you feeling any better?” Sebastian asked. “I made you tea, the fruit flavored kind you drink while you’re reading. I figured that’s your comfort tea.”

“It is. Thanks.” Ava accepted the tea cup from her position on the sofa, her legs curled up under a throw, Shelby, the cat, snoozing beside her.

Sebastian sat on Ava’s other side. He gently brushed her hair back behind her ears and pressed a hand to her forehead. “You’re not hot. But you’re seriously pale.” Worry creased his brow. “I’ll call my mom, she’ll come over and-”

“Don’t. I’m okay. I don’t need your mom to come over.”

“Look, I know she’s done some stuff that you don’t love and you don’t really want anything to do with my parents, which, in any other circumstance, I’m fine with, but in this circumstance, you’re sick and my mom is a good doctor.”

“Don’t call your mom, don’t waste her time.” Ava set her tea on the end table. “The truth is, I’m not sick.”

Sebastian frowned at her. “My mom won’t do anything manipulative, I promise. She’ll just figure out how to make you feel better. Please let her do that for me, Ava. I really don’t like how pale you are right now.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to worry you. You don’t need to call your mom. I’m not actually sick.”

“But you’re pale and-” The moment the thought struck him, it brought an enormous grin to his face. “You’re not really sick, but do you have morning sickness or night sickness or whatever it is that pregnant-”

“I would have told you that right away. I’m fake sick.”

“What? You mean you faked sick to leave the game night you insisted we have with Lila and Bowie. That doesn’t even make sense, Ava. If you’re that leery of my mom, I’ll just call a different doctor, you don’t have to lie and pretend you aren’t sick. It’s obvious that you are, no healthy person would suddenly be twenty times paler than they normally are.”

“I’m pale because I chickened out. I wanted to talk to the three of you tonight about something and I chickened out and I guess in a way that has made me feel a little sick.”

Finally. Finally she admitted something was wrong. “You’ve been quiet and distant for awhile now, is that what this is about? What were you going to tell us?” And why had she wanted their friends present for it? “Tell me. Talk to me. I want to help. That’s what husbands are for.”

“Yeah. I think this is right. I should tell you first. I need to tell you that Xavier showed up at the bookstore and we talked and I think he deserves to know about Jesse. I think that’s the right thing to do.”
