Episode 696: The Hardest ThingAdria sent another glance Ryley’s way, hoping their eyes would meet, hoping he would say something, hoping, hoping, hoping. But he just sat there with his temple resting against the airplane window, the same way he’d just sat there the last two days and nights at the resort, silent. She leaned close and set her chin on his shoulder. "I didn’t think-" "No. You didn’t." Ryley cut her off, still not looking at her. Adria began to wonder whether her husband would ever look at her again. They’d had their share of problems, but it was new for her to be on this side of things, to be the one desperate to hold them together. Her heart couldn’t take a minute more of his cold shoulder. "I’ll tell Dustin, no." Just like that, Ryley looked at her again. But he wasn’t smiling. He wasn’t glad. "If you tell him no, you’ll resent me for it," he said. "I won’t." "You will." "thought you wanted me to say no. Now I agree to say no and it’s still a problem." Adria frowned at him. "I can’t win." "Neither can I," Ryley insisted. "Either I have to worry or you resent me. You say you won’t but this is something you really want, refusing it, will sting." "Well, what should I do, then?" "I don’t know." "I wouldn’t do anything with him." "What if he doesn’t give you a choice, Addie?" Ryley scrubbed his face with his hands. "You have a choice right now. You’re the one who has to decide. I can’t decide this for you, that’s where the resentment will come in, whatever you do, it needs to be for you. It’s the only way you won’t end up hating me." Tears sprang to Adria’s eyes. She wished she’d never bumped into Dustin. She wished a dream role wasn’t right there for the taking. "What if you hate me?" She asked her devoted husband, expecting, counting on him to say I wouldn’t hate you for anything, ever, but he didn’t. He just looked away again.
