It should have been a happy time for Adria; she’d finally gained her dad’s support. She felt more tears coming on, however, when her sister dropped her hand and strode to the door. Addie rushed after Justine. "Please, don’t be mad at me. Don’t make me choose. You don’t want to be like him, do you?"

"It’s okay, Addie. I’m not mad at you. I’m mad at him for being such a hypocrite. Why is it okay for you to live your life the way that makes you happy, but that’s not okay for me?"

"I don’t know. I’m sorry," Adria said.

Justine nodded. "We’ll talk soon." She kissed Addie’s temple. "Watch out for strings. There are bound to be some with him." ,P>Their father scoffed as Justine exited with her family in tow. "Your sister has sour grapes over the choices she’s made."

"Maybe because there’s nothing wrong with the choices she’s made," Addie blurted, knowing she was likely jeopardizing her newfound acceptance from her father. "Justine married a good man, and she has a beautiful little girl."

"She could have had a great deal more."

"But-"

"Ad, I’m on Justine’s side, too, but right now you’re my main concern," her husband said. He wrapped an arm around her and eyed her dad. "Why the sudden change of heart?"

"Contrary to popular opinion, I am not an unreasonable man. I am aware of how hard Adria has struggled for over a year now to live up to my expectations. It was a valiant effort, but it became apparent yesterday, when Adria stopped by my office that she’s not happy. I want you to be happy, Adria. That’s all I’ve ever wanted."

"Why do I find that hard to believe?" Ryley asked.
