Episode 1236: Until

“You’ve been quiet for hours now, even at dinner and with the kids,” Adria ventured from her perch on the edge of the bathtub, finishing up her nightly moisturizing ritual while her husband stood at the sink brushing his teeth. “Do you want to talk about it? Has whatever drama that was happening at work today come back to haunt you? Are you and Damita at odds again? I thought you’d reached a sort of truce.”

“We have.” Ryley placed his rinsed toothbrush in the holder and turned to Adria. “Things are okay with Damita, well, except for having to spend half the day reassuring her that we aren’t going to lose our jobs.”

“Why would she worry about that? My dad would never ax top performers, which you two are. And it’s not like my dad’s company would ever be in trouble, I mean who’s savvier than he is when it comes to business?”

“You know, I’ve learned a lot, too,” Ryley said, “I’ve been in the business world for a long time. I’m a great source of information when it comes to business and a far less toxic option than taking your dad’s advice. So I’m just… I’m confused about why you would seek a pact with the devil instead of trying my input first.”

Adria fumbled the lid onto her lotion jar and shot to her feet. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. By the devil, you mean my dad? You’re the only one of us who has a pact with him so maybe you shouldn’t work for him if you think of him as the devil, but that’s up to you, I just want you to be happy wherever you are. As for me, I couldn’t tell you the last time I even spoke to my dad. I certainly haven’t made a pact with him.”

“Your dad let it slip to Damita and I that one of his kids is coming back to work for him. Damita immediately thought we were being pushed out of our positions whereas all that went through my head is, what if it’s Adria?

“This was some bizarro version of me? Do you seriously think that little of your wife? Do you really think I’d ditch the theater I love to team up with my dad? Have I ever expressed any interest in that? Maybe you’re the bizarro one.”

“I thought maybe your dad offered funding for the theater that was too much for you to pass up eve if in exchange you had to go corporate. I was wrong. I’m so glad to hear I was wrong.”

Adria frowned at her husband. “How could you be that wrong? This feels like you don’t know me at all. How could you ever think that I would trade my creative life for cash?”

“Not even if that cash influx could make the theater even more successful?” Ryley raised a questioning eyebrow at her. “I thought I understood you, too, until lately. Until you started threatening to fire your sister every other day and ditched your tea date with Miranda and we had to have a holiday and birthday do-over, and you can’t even read a bedtime story or color with the kids without multitasking it with work. So yeah, I thought I understood you, too, but honestly, I’m just not as sure anymore.
