Episode 1217: Magic

“Sebastian, you need to calm down. The baby probably hasn’t come yet. There’s still time to get there,” his mother said.

“We don’t know the baby hasn’t come yet. We haven’t been able to talk to dad since we were at the house.”

“I doubt the baby has arrived, okay? And if we don’t get there in time it is not the end of the world, your father is there.”

“I’m sure that’s really comforting for Ava. He’s her favorite person on earth.”

“She could do worse. He’s a good person to have in your corner in a crisis.”

Bas raised his head off the steering wheel and glared at his mother in the passenger seat. “What happened to telling me to calm down? Now you’re saying it’s a crisis? Crisis isn’t a calm word!”

“It’s not a crisis, it just feels like a crisis to you, and it likely feels like a crisis to Ava right now, but if there is anyone who can make her feel like they’re in control of an uncontrollable situation, that person is your father. Trust that he will be a reassuring presence.”

“Ava hates him, so, no, I don’t trust that she’ll feel reassured by him.” Sebastian reached for his phone again. “Still not working. Check yours again.”

“I’m sure it’s the same as yours,” Katherine said, however, with a pointed look from her son, she checked her phone as well. “Nothing. No service. It’s the storm it came on so suddenly and wreaked its havoc and now there’s nothing to be done but wait.”

“Thanks for the reminder. I almost forgot what a mess this is. I can’t even talk to my wife on the phone let alone be there- Traffic’s moving up ahead, Mom! We’re moving!”

It still took some time but Sebastian arrived at the hospital with little time to spare. All of it felt surreal. Seeing his dad hold Ava’s hand, Shelby making herself at home in the hospital room, and most surreal of all, the moment the nurse placed the warm bundle in his arms and said, “meet your son, Dad.”
