Episode 115: With Arms Wide Open

It was her ideal late fall afternoon. The surroundings flashed by in a mirage of orange and brown. Curran was at the wheel on a winding country road and John Mellencamp was playing on the stereo. And, she was miserable.

"All right?" He asked, brushing the side of her face with his thumb, and she nodded. "You’re still sad, don’t pretend."

"I don’t want to ruin your day; I seem to ruin everyone’s day."

"If you don’t mind my saying it, you’re being foolish," Curran responded putting both hands back on the wheel as they took a sharp corner. "You’re believing too much of your own press, you’re not god, you did everything you could within the limits and that is that."

Katherine shook her head with steely resolve. "I haven’t heard from her since that night, I thought about going to the memorial but I just couldn’t."

"The girl is mourning the only family she knows, just give her time, I imagine she’s more avoiding bumping into Sebastian than you. She sounds like a levelheaded girl, she can plainly see that you’re a genius doc and that they ought to build statues devoted to the goddess with the stethoscope," he cheered her, leaning over and giving her a peck on the cheek.

Katherine couldn’t help smiling for the first time in weeks. "You were right; a drive through the country was exactly what I needed."
