Smithee, Avengers Top RazziesThis morning Hollywood presented the best it had to offer, but what about all the dreck we were forced to sit through when all showings of Saving Private Ryan were sold out?Nominations for the 19th annual Razzies, presented by the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, were announced Monday, holding up for ridicule the absolute bottom of the big-screen barrel. Topping the dishonors this year was Joe Eszterhas' critically reviled Alan Smithee Film, which received an embarrassing nine nods, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Ryan O'Neal), and Worst Supporting Actor (Sylvester Stallone — his 23rd Razzie nomination!). Close behind with eight nominations was the Ralph Fiennes-Uma Thurman turkey The Avengers; the special effects-laden Armageddon nabbed seven; Spice World took six; and Godzilla brought up the rear, as it were, with five. Other big names getting denounced included Anne Heche for Psycho; Jessica Lange for Hush; Liv Tyler for Armageddon; and Joe Pesci for Lethal Weapon 4. The winners, er, losers, will be announced the night before the Oscars (March 20). Only Showgirls director Paul Verhoeven has ever shown up to collect the prize — a golf ball-size plastic raspberry on top of a reel of Super 8 film spray painted gold (value: $7.29) — although Eszterhas, who happened to pen Showgirls, pledges to go this year if Alan Smithee wins Worst Film.
