Gretzky could be target for next Leafs president

After the Toronto Maple Leafs let go Brian Burke, they could be interested in bringing in another big name to be the next president.

Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos and Damien Cox and Sportsnet 590 The Fan's Bob McCown discussed the possibility that Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment could target Wayne Gretzky to fill the role as the Maple Leafs president.

"I’ve often thought Wayne Gretzky was coming back to Toronto," Cox said on Prime Time Sports Wednesday. If you’re Bell and Rogers, who would be better than Wayne Gretzky as president of the Toronto Maple Leafs."

"Only chance we see Wayne back in NHL in that type of capacity," Kypreos told Cox and McCown. "If not, ownership again and I don’t know if he would be interested (in that) with everything he’s gone through with Phoenix."

Currently, Maple Leafs COO Tom Anselmi is listed as the team's president. It remains unclear if MLSE would prefer someone with more of a hockey background.

Gretzky has not worked in the NHL since he left the Phoenix Coyotes in 2009. He spent nine years with the club as the alternate governor, managing partner, head of hockey operations, and head coach (2005-09).

The Leafs promoted Dave Nonis to general manager after the Leafs fired Burke Jan. 9, who was the team president during his tenure with the organization.
