GRETZKY'S OILERS DEJA VU

The Edmonton Sun begins that it's blasphemy to talk of today’s Oilers on training wheels in the same sentence as the 1980s glory gang which won the first of five Stanley Cups after only five seasons in the league.

And yet ...

Because of 30th, 30th and 29th place finishes punctuated by the lockout, there’s definitely the feeling that a new era of Oilers Hockey is about to start.

“I think there’s a comparison in the character of these kids and their desire to play the game,” said Wayne Gretzky. “There’s a similar energy and work ethic with these kids.

“I think there’s a comparison there with Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins with myself, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson.”

It’s almost sacrilegious to make those kinds of comparisons. Those guys are all Hall of Famers.

But Gretzky says go back.

“I remember Glen Sather telling us ‘One day you could be Hall of Famers if you work hard.’ I remember him saying: ‘If you work hard together a lot of great things can happen.’ ”

Gretzky said he’s looking forward to watching this new era unfold.

“It’s a process as a team with developing talent like that, a process of believing in each other. To some extent when you’re 19 and 20 you’re still in a survival mode. Eberle and Hall are past that step now. Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov and Schultz are going through it,” he said.
