Wayne Gretzky, Luc Robitaille to captain teams in outdoor game It looks like Wayne Gretzky isn’t done playing hockey after all. Just over a month after The Great One suggested the alumni game at the 2016 Heritage Classic might have been his last, it was announced that Gretzky would captain a team comprised of various NHL alumni and celebrities at an outdoor game on Jan. 6 at Bakersfield College’s Memorial Stadium in California. The game will be held prior to an outdoor AHL game featuring the farm teams of the Edmonton Oilers (Bakersfield Condors) and Los Angeles Kings (Ontario Reign). Luc Robitaille, the highest-scoring left-winger in NHL history, will captain the other team. "The success of the (California) NHL clubs has been very positive, but the American Hockey League teams in cities like Bakersfield and Ontario have elevated the sport that much higher and made it even more popular," Gretzky told NHL.com. "It's great to see a city like Bakersfield with people who are excited about watching hockey and have gravitated to these players that one day will play in the National Hockey League." Gretzky played a large role in developing interest in the sport of hockey throughout the California, after a trade brought him to the Kings in 1988.
