Oilers to host celebration for 1984 Stanley Cup team

The Edmonton Oilers will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the franchise's first Stanley Cup with an event bringing together the members of the 1984 Stanley Cup team and staff for a reunion at Rexall Place on Oct. 10.

"Winning the first Stanley Cup in 1984 was a huge moment for everyone on the team," Wayne Gretzky said. "We gave everything we had that year and it took a monumental team effort to dethrone the Islanders. It is going to be amazing to see everyone again, the first time we've all been together since 1984. I can't wait to be in Edmonton and share stories and many great memories with our fans."

Besides Gretzky, other Oilers legends from that team that will be in attendance include Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Glenn Anderson and Glen Sather, the team's coach.

"The 1984 team was the people's team, Edmonton's team, and the whole city played a part in making us champions," Oilers president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe, a defenseman on the championship team, said. "It was a historic occasion for the city of Edmonton and the National Hockey League. It's only fitting we invite fans back to where the magic happened to celebrate with an evening of intimate storytelling, entertainment and interaction with the team."

Tickets for the event go on sale Aug. 22 at $99 per seat. Proceeds raised from the event will be donated to the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation in Edmonton for the creation of a new pediatric ambulatory clinic.
