Four Days pulls it off ... barely

TORONTO - I'm impressed Curtis Wehfritz managed to pull off this debut feature film, despite some embarrassing dialogue, a convoluted plot and some clumsy, artsy moments -perhaps remnant of his music video directing days.

Four Days has an ambitious storyline. Father, Milt, and his son, known as the Kid, dupe the partner in a bank heist. Milt dies, but the Kid doesn't know, so he heads north with the loot to rendezvous with his father.

By this time, Milt's foiled partner, Fury (Colm Meany of Star Trek TV series fame) figures out the double-cross and heads north in pursuit of his money with Feather (Robert LePage's muse Anne-Marie Cadieux –it is a treat seeing Cadieux act in English.) Toss in a sexy but frustrated wife, Crystal (Lolita Davidovich) who is escaping her crazy jealous husband, Gray (Patrick Goyette) and a cameo by Canadian convict-turned-writer-turned-convict-again Stephen Reid. Reid acted as the technical advisor for the bank robbery scenes.

The best moments in Four Days are when the actors act, instead of breaking into monologues as Milt and Fury are apt to do. Kevin Zegers (the Kid) is the perfect man/child. Too bad he had to open his mouth to speak.
