Lindros, Flyers raise $27,000 for coronavirus relief

Eric Lindros helped the Philadelphia Flyers raise $27,000 for COVID-19 hunger relief.

The Hockey Hall of Famer, who was named a team ambassador April 23, helped auction off the Ultimate Flyers Game Day Experience as part of the ALL IN Challenge. The winner and up to 11 of their guests will go on the ice with Lindros after a Flyers morning skate, participate in the ceremonial puck drop with him, watch the game in a suite with him and have a post-game celebration with him and some special guests.

The NHL season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus and all money raised is going toward hunger relief charities: Meals on Wheels, No Kid Hungry, America's Food Fund, World Central Kitchen and Feeding America.

"I'm hard-pressed to think of a situation where someone gets to go out and drop the opening game puck type of thing with 11 friends," Lindros said when he was named an ambassador, the same day the auction was announced. "We basically have the whole rink to ourselves for the whole day. Go for a skate after the pregame skate and have the ice to ourselves, get our skates on and shoot the puck around. It'll be fun and we'll have a great time. Hopefully we can help out in a positive way here."

Lindros spent the first eight of his 13 NHL seasons with the Flyers and the forward ranks sixth in team history with 659 points (290 goals, 369 assists) in 486 games. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.

Lindros lives with his wife and three young children in the Toronto area, but his new ambassador role will give him more excuses to return to Philadelphia.

"It's good to come back and see some old friends," he said. "(Former teammate) John LeClair is still in the area, there are a few other guys that you pop into. It's good to get back a lot more."

Lindros, along with LeClair, was inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame in 2014, and his No. 88 was retired Jan. 18, 2018.

"Few players in Flyers history inspire as much excitement and passion among the fanbase as Eric Lindros, and during this unprecedented time, those positive feelings are exactly what we want to deliver to our fans," Flyers president of business operations Valerie Camillo said. "This ambassadorship with Eric has been in the works for quite some time, and we made the decision to kick it off right now, not only as a special engagement for our fans, but even more importantly as an integral way to assist those impacted by COVID-19."
