Episode 984: Stay Stay Stay

“What’s this?” The words barely scraped out past the enormous lump that had formed in his throat the moment he spied the open suitcase on the bed and his wife packing it with clothing. Sebastian pressed a palm to the wall to steady himself. There wasn’t really any steadying himself. Hyperventilating hit him. At first the breaths were quicker than normal, then it was like he couldn’t breathe at all, he was gasping for air.

“Oh, my gosh, hey.” Avalon turned to find him in such a struggle. “Hey.” She placed a hand on him and she placed his hand on her. “Breathe with me.”

It took some time for him to calm down, but he got there by following her lead with breathing, or maybe it was more the contact with her, being touched by her, touching, neither of which had happened a lot since his sister’s vengeance.

“Okay?” Ava asked. Her palm rubbed small circles over his heart.

He took a shot and kissed the corner of her mouth. She didn’t recoil. She was leaving though, she was packing a bag. People packed bags to leave.

“Don’t. Whatever you’re thinking, don’t. Keep breathing. Don’t freak out again. That bag is not what you think. I’m not leaving you. I’m not. You almost hurt Xavier with it. You did hurt us. And clearly you’re hurting yourself. You’ve got to figure out your insecurity stuff. Maybe talk to your mom.”

“I’m pretty sure she’s one of the reasons for my insecurity.” She had cheated on his dad, and as a kid he’d carried around the guilt of knowing it, he’d felt betrayed, too. And if a guy like his dad, a successful, totally together person got cheated on, what chance did someone who wasn’t any of those things have of holding on to someone?

“I mean talk to your mom about a referral for a psychiatrist.”

“I’m not crazy.”

“I didn’t say you were. It’s just that sometimes you handle your emotions in a destructive way and it will destroy us if you don’t get a grip on it. While I’m aware, talk to your mom, get a name, I’ll go to the sessions, too, if you want me there.”

“What do you mean while you’re away? You said there was nothing to worry about. I thought that meant the suitcase was to take old clothes to a thrift store, but you are leaving.”

“Not forever. My dad just found out an old friend died. He sounded really upset on the phone, and I mean, he has nobody, so I asked if he wanted me to go with him to the funeral. Since it’s so last minute, I can’t force an extra shift on an employee, you need to stay here and open the store tomorrow.”

Sebastian swallowed hard. He pushed a hand through his hair. “This is for sure all about supporting your dad? There isn’t a part of you that’s glad for the time away, glad for the space to think about what you want, or who you want?”

Ava didn’t respond. Her expression told the story, that he’d said exactly the wrong thing.
