Episode 497: Crying Shame

"Mom! I-" her youngest daughter’s face held utter shock at her entrance into the quiet bridal boutique. "This is the last place I’d expect to see you."

The truth hurt. A lifetime’s worth of regrets stabbed Katherine all at once.

"Mom." Adria collected her hands. "Is everything okay? You look, I don’t know, not well or something. Do you want me to take you home, or to the clinic, maybe?"

"I’m exactly where I want to be," Katherine said. "Feeling better already." The concern in her baby’s eyes meant the world to her. Gave her hope. She still had a chance to make things right. To make up for some of those memories they’d missed. "I’m so glad I saw you step out of your car while I was driving past. I would hate to have missed this." She blinked back tears, fought through the lump forming in her throat. "I wish you’d asked me to be here."

Addie’s mouth opened then snapped shut as if she wasn’t sure how to answer, and then tears filled her eyes, too. "More than anything I want you to be part of my life, it’s just, asking has never been enough."

Katherine nodded, wrapped her arms around Addie and held tight. She pulled back just enough to look into her daughter’s eyes and stroke her hair as she apologized. "This is my fault. I haven’t been there for you as much as I should have been."

It made perfectly sad sense that her daughter wouldn’t invite Katherine to take part in something as momentous as her wedding gown fitting. That’s what happened when you were too involved in your own life to be involved enough with your children. She was here now though. At least she was here now.
