Episode 1228: Head High

Tansy smiled at her phone. Messages from Lucy and Xavier. Each checking in. Each promising to be at Lucy’s later to start putting together a study plan for her. They each closed with a variation on keep your chin up, you’ve earned every opportunity you’ve gotten, you’re a hard worker and anyone who suggests otherwise they’re probably jealous, they want to see you quit, to make their own path easier. Don’t let them bring you down.

Tansy replied to each of them with a thank you and a heart emoji.

“Nose to the grindstone as usual,” Shelane observed with the scoffing sound Tansy had come to think of as the other young woman’s trademark.

“It’s not a crime for some people to spend time on their phone,” Shelane corrected. “For most of us, it’s a risk to slack off from our job.”

“I hadn’t even started my shift yet. I won’t be on my phone once while I’m actually working,” Tansy replied.

“Well, pin a rose on your special nose.”

Tansy frowned and tried to return to the work in front of her, ignore her rude workmate, pretend the comments just slipped off her back, but she’d been doing that for months and where had it gotten her? Feeling like Shelane’s punching bag for months.

“I’m not quitting,” Tansy announced, lifting her head, chin high, just like Lucy and Xavier encouraged her to feel.

Lucy had suggested trying to talk it through or to at least make it clear the other girl was wasting her breath, that Tansy was not going to be intimidated. Except Tansy was teetering right on the edge of intimidated. Fake it til you make it though, right?

“I’m not a little kid. You can say all the awful things you want, you are not going to scare me out of here.”

“If I were you, I wouldn’t give up my cushy position either,” Shelane replied, cool as a cucumber.

“How is my position here cushy? Really, please, explain it to me because I don’t understand where all these comments come from. I’m stuck doing boring grunt work, no different than you are.”

“You are entirely different from me,” Shelane said. “I’m here on merit, the only reason you’re here is because the boss wants to shove it in your grandfather’s face.”
