Episode 1132: Know Your Enemy

He did not like feeling duped. No one did, of course. But Phillip Marques, it cut him particularly deep as the only people who had ever managed to pull the wool over his eyes were his loved ones, the very people he should have been able to trust the most.

There had been incidents throughout his youth with his father that made him feel like an idiot for not seeing what was right in front of his own face, for letting his father mislead him.

Then there was his wife's affair compounded by the numerous times his own children had left him in the dark or pulled off some sort of subterfuge. Each and every time had left the wound a little bit wider, a little bit deeper.

And now his granddaughter. She was like a vat of acid being poured in. He’d believed Tansy to be the most honest and upstanding person he’d ever had the privilege to know.

What a fool. How could he pride himself on a sharp business mind when every member of his family seemed capable of snowing him. It was embarrassing, it made him feel stupid for continually falling for these acts, but more than anything, because he was human, it hurt.

“I need you to leave,” Phillip announced, words he never would have expected to say to his granddaughter.

“What?” Tansy stood there with her mouth hanging open.

“I don’t think it will be good for our relationship if we discuss your part in the cover up for Xavier. I need some time to process the situation before I say anything further to you on the matter. The way I feel right now it’s possible I’d say something regrettable. It’s best if you just go home.”

Tansy shook off her stunned expression and reached for the dog leash. “Walter needs to go for a walk. Can’t I still do that? And maybe after you’ll be cooled off enough to have a reasonable-”

Phillip took the leash from her hand. “I’ll take Walter for a walk. I could use some air and time to think.”

“But Grandpa, I can’t go home yet. I’m supposed to work today.” A frown settled on Tansy’s face. “Or don’t I even work here anymore? Without you even hearing me out? I’m just an enemy now and that’s that?”
