Episode 1121: Is It Love?

“This is a super busy time for me, Bas, no offense, you know you’re my bestie, I’m grateful you’re alive and all but I don’t really have a lot of time for chitchatting at the moment,” Lila said standing in the entryway of Bas and Ava’s home. “The world is full of cliché people eager to marry during valentine’s season so I have weddings up the wazoo.”

“Sounds uncomfortable,” Bas quipped though Lila could see his heart wasn’t in the joke.

“The bridezillas and groomzillas aren’t a barrel of laughs to deal with but practically everyone is willing to up the ante to tie the knot during the so-called most romantic time of the year so it’s worth it. Although I’m not left with a lot of time for anything else. So maybe you could get to the gist of why you needed me to stop by.”

“I need to have a conversation with you in private to be sure Bowie doesn’t overhear or feel the need to pass this along to Ava.”

“Okay, so what is it you’re worried he’ll tell her? If you say you finally have a foolproof plan to ship Xavier to the other side of the world, call me skeptical and count me out, too. I decided to listen to my husband and let sleeping dogs lie, don’t poke the bear, all that jazz.”

Sebastian’s expression noticeably fell at that.

“Look,” Lila hurriedly added, “if you truly need a partner in crime I guess I would be up for it but there might be something to not drawing Xavier’s attention, not throwing up red flags on my son or your marriage.”

“I don’t have a plan. I was hoping I wouldn’t feel like I needed one. I was hoping when I asked you if Xavier is still in town you’d say no and Ava wouldn’t have to hear from Bowie that I’m as insecure as ever when it comes to Xavier.”

“It doesn’t matter that he’s still in town,” Lila tried to insure him. It was the same thing she kept telling herself. “He can’t bust up the father-son bond between Bowie and Jesse any more than he can bust up you and Ava. We’ve been panicking for no reason, this is as solid as relationships get. Jesse’s choosing to go into business with Bowie, with his dad, and I mean look at how devoted Ava has been to you these past months, practically chained to you.”

“Maybe, but what about before? She doesn’t know I remember this Lila, but the day the car hit me, I had just seen Ava really, really close with Xavier. I can see from the look on your face you were unaware of that. So do you still think I have nothing to worry about? Do you think she’s been chained to me out of love and devotion or out of guilt?”
