Ed O'Neill Tries Hand at Drama

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - As a tough New York police detective in the new series "Big Apple," Ed O'Neill couldn't have found a show more different than "Married With Children," or a character more opposite to Al Bundy.

O'Neill played Bundy, a surly Chicago shoe salesman with an equally disagreeable family, on the Fox sitcom, which ended in 1997 after a 10-year run.

"Big Apple," which debuts Thursday night on CBS, is from David Milch, co-creator of "NYPD Blue," and Anthony Yerkovich of the '80s police drama "Miami Vice."

"I got a lot of offers to do various shows," O'Neill said. "They weren't what I was looking for. I just wanted something that I could do and that would be interesting."

O'Neill, 54, recalled that he'd enjoyed his guest spot on the first episode of "Miami Vice."

"So when this opportunity came up and then I read it, I said, `Well, I have to do it."'
